Deacons are nominated and elected by the people of the Congregation.  The word deacon is derived from the Greek verb, diakonein, meaning “to serve.”  The office has a long and honorable history and goes back in origin to the early church.  Those who ministered to the spirits of the people by the administration of the Word were no longer able to handle the physical aspects of the life of the church.  As a results, the disciples said:

It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.   Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty.”
Acts 6:2b-3

According to the Book of Order,

The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor the hungry, the sick , the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, the burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distressed.   Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgement should be chosen for this ministry.”
