Mission Sunday – August 20, 2017

Thanksgiving for Service

Cathay Snyder, member of the Mission Committee, named a number of mission projects in the community in which people of MPC may have participated and asked those participants to stand.  This was the result:

Anne Partridge was honored for more than 30 years of service to the Ecumenical Food Pantry at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Harrisburg.  Ward VerHage, from the Ecumenical Food Pantry, spoke briefly regarding its history.  She received a Certificate of Recognition from the Ecumenical Food Pantry and a gift certificate from the MPC congregation.

Blessing of the Backpacks

“Bless, O God, these our children, those whom we have promised to love and nurture at their baptism.  Keep them safe, keep them excited, keep them ever seeking to learn more and to develop their gifts.  Grant that through their study, they may gain the tools to grow in love and faith and service, all their days.”

“Bless, O God, these backpacks and the children who carry them.”

The Sermon

The Rev. Drew Stockstill was our guest pastor this morning.  He is Director of Health Ministries at Christ Lutheran Church in the heart of Harrisburg’s vibrant Allison Hill neighborhood.  His sermon titled, “Take My Life” was based on the text from Matthew 28:18-20 and Matthew 15:10-28.

Commissioning Prayer

Commissioning Prayer
“Faithful God, in baptism you claimed us; and by your Holy Spirit you are working in our lives, empowering us to live a life worthy of our calling.  We thank you for leading Madison to this time and place.  Establish her in your truth, and guide her by your Holy Spirit, that in your service she may grow in faith, hope, and love, and be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever.  Amen”
